Spoilt for Choise

By our guest blogger Jessica MacCormick. Jessica is a senior in High School in Dubai and owns a show jumper with which she competes.

These days it has become evident that horses and ponies are being taking for granted. Young children with rich parents start riding lessons and within 2 months seem to believe they are the next Ellen Whitaker, click their fingers and demand a horse or pony. It’s understandable that every little girl has their dream of owning their own little palomino pony and being able to take it to shows, however it’s not acceptable for these kids to get a pony that they’re not going to look after. Horses are living creatures with emotions that need to be treated with respect. Even worse is when an inexperienced rider has the money to buy an expensive show horse, without having the capabilities of riding it. One of the most heartbreaking things to witness is a horse with so much potential being jabbed in the mouth over jumps, prodded in the stomach with someone incapable of wearing spurs and even just having the wind blown out of them with ‘pony club kicks’. People need to come to the realization that you don’t need a Grand Prix show jumping horse to reach success, there is a horse suitable out there for everyone and it just takes time to find the right horse for you. The moral of the story is to think twice before demanding a horse/pony or being the willing parent ready to do anything to put a smile on your child’s face. Horses are not like bikes, they can’t be left standing in the garage for months without use, they require time and love so if you are seriously considering buying one, be prepared to care for it!
