To Ride or Not to Ride

To ride or not to ride

Ever since I started making money in my first job, I have owned my own horse. Now, for the first time in 12 years, I am horseless and find myself trying to justify it over and over again.

Dubai is too hot to ride during the day in the five summer months, and I don’t have time to ride at 5 or 6 in the morning when the other riders ride, as I have little kids who need to go to school. I would ride in the evening when the kids are in bed, but the stable closes at 7.30! Who would have thought that in this place of extreme wealth, there is but one indoor riding hall (about an hour drive from home) Besides this, the stables (the ones with jumper and dressage facilities) are all pretty far from my home and board is not cheap either. Plus for the two hottest months of the year I flee with my family to Europe.

Then the other thing is that I only like to ride a horse when working towards a goal: train, improve (or fix), show and sell. I certainly do not enjoy a ride on a school horse once a week, and the odd hack in the desert I only enjoy because of the nice scenery and company! So for now I am trying life without owning horses. I work, I swim and I enjoy being with my family but still….

I tried to going to a class at the local gym once and found out I really do not mind the smell of sweat, as long as it is horse sweat! Maybe I should move away from dressage and jumping here and lease an endurance horse for the season next fall? Or maybe I should save all the money I am not spending on board, lessons, a trailer, shows, vets and farriers… and buy myself a well trained, fancy dressage horse once we move to cooler places in a few years?
